La paraula “bone” significa os, però sabies que canvia de significat si la fem servir a forma d’expressió? Quan apareix en una “Idiomatic expression” no ha de tenir el seu significat literal, més aviat es fa servir com a part de la frase o a través del seu significat metafòric.

A continuació trobaràs algunes expressions en anglès que inclouen la paraula “bone” amb exemples de com utilitzar-les en les teves converses diàries:

(Be) a bone of Contention

• Significat: motiu de desacord o discussió.
• Exemple: Watching TV during meals is real bone of Contention in our family. I think it’s distracting but the rest of my family say that’s ridiculous!

Bone up on something

• Significat: estudiar intensament.
• Exemple: I need to bone up on my facts before the class debat.

(Be) bone idle

• Significat: extremadament mandrós.
• Exemple: Kate is bone idle, she never lifts a finger to help!

Make no bones about something

• Significat: parlar d’alguna cosa obertament, enlloc de mantenir-ho en secret.
•  Exemple: Carla made no bones about her opinion of our plans. She’s thinks we ought to start all over again.

Have a bone to pick with somebody

• Significat: voler parlar amb algú sobre alguna cosa dolenta/molesta que ha fet.
• Exemple: I’ve got a bone to pick with Jackie – she’s been using my make-up again!

Work your fingers to the bone

• Significat: treballar moltíssim durant un llarg període de temps.
• Exemple: I’ve been working my fingers to the bone while you’ve been on holiday!

Feel something in your bones

• Significat: creure en alguna cosa fermament.
• Exemple: I just know you’ll get into Cambridge University; I can feel it in my bones.

(Be) soaked to the bone

• Significat: molt mullat o xop.
• Exemple: We got soaked to the bone queuing up for tickets in the pounding rain.

(Be) close to the bone

• Significat: atrevit o indecent.
• Exemple: The comedian’s jokes were a little close to the bone for such a young audience.

Funny bone

• Significat: lloc al colze interior on un fort impacte causa una sensació estranya en el braç / Vena humorística.
• Exemple: For some strange reason, that answer always seemed to tickle his funny bone.
