Despite i in spite of són expressions preposicionals que signifiquen exactament el mateix. Despite / in spite of s’utilitzen per a mostrar el contrast entre dues coses. Tenen un significat similar a although o even though. És més comú utilitzar-les a nivell escrit que parlat i sol ser més popular l’ús de  despite.

Després de in spite of i despite utilitzem un nom, un pronom (this/that/waht etc) o gerundi (forma -ing d’un verb). Es poden utilitzar tant a principi de frase com al mig.

Et deixem alguns exemples:

• We went out despite the rain.
• I didn’t get the job despite being the best qualified candidate.
• He didn’t feel well, but in spite of this he went to school.
• She had difficulty speaking in English in spite of all her years of study.
• In spite of not being invited, he turned up at the wedding.
• Despite what you said yesterday, I still think we should move to a new house.

“The fact that”

Una frase molt útil que afegeix desimboltura i articulació és “the fact that”. Et deixem un exemple de com estructurar-ho:

Despite / in spite of + the fact that + clause + contrasting clause.

Exemples:

• Despite the fact that it’d been raining all day long, we still had a barbecue.
• We still had a barbecue despite the fact that it’d been raining all day long.
• In spite of the fact that the economy has recently got worse, our company is surviving.
• Our company is surviving in spite of the fact that the economy has recently got worse.

Per a tenir en compte / errors freqüents:

• No utilitzem “that” després d'”in spite of” o “despite”.
• No utilitzem mai “of” després de “despite“.

Quines són les diferències entre in spite of/despite amb regardless of?

Les dues formes són seguides per noms (o gerundis) però hi ha una diferència de significat. Regardless of no mostra un contrast de la mateixa manera. Mostra una informació sense cap efecte.

Per exemple:

• She won’t let you go to the party regardless of how nice you are to her.

En aquest exemple amb regardless of t’està dient que dona igual lo simpàtic que siguis, que no et deixar anar a la festa. T’indica que siguis o no simpàtic no hi ha cap diferència.

• She won’t let you go to the party despite/in spite of how nice you are to her.

En aquest exemple amb despite/in spite of indica que, encara que sap que ets simpàtic, no és suficient per a canviar d’opinió.
