A la primera part del writing del First Certificate és obligatori escriure un essay. Hi ha dos tipus d’assajos: opinion essay o for and against essay. Els punts principals que has de saber sobre el for and against essay són:
- Hauràs d’escriure entre 140 i 190 paraules.
- Hauràs d’escriure amb un registre formal i un to objectiu.
- Tasca: Et proporcionen el títol de l’assaig i una idea general sobre el tema. Et demanaran que proporcionis 5 arguments a favor i en contra.
- Exemple de tasca: ‘Young people are spending too much time on their mobiles. They should spend a month without this technology.’
FCE Writing Tips: estructura del for and against essay
- Paràgraf 1: Introducció. Declaració general sobre el tema. No expressis la teva opinió.
- Paràgraf 2: Contrasta un argument a favor i en contra a cada paràgraf.
- Paràgraf 3: Aporta una o dues raons més per donar suport a l’argument o als arguments d’altres persones en contra de la teva opinió i per què no estàs d’acord amb ells.
- Párrafo 4: Resum i conclusió. Repeteix la teva opinió.
Analitzem paràgraf a paràgraf com escriure un for and against essay
PARÀGRAF 1
Al paràgraf introductori, presenta el tema amb claredat i d’una manera interessant. Fes una declaració general, com pot ser dir per què és important o per què les persones tenen diferents opinions al respecte sense donar la teva opinió en aquest paràgraf. Un assaig “a favor o en contra” ha de guiar al lector de tal manera que arribi a la teva conclusió.

The question is whether life without mobiles is possible. Most people claim that teenagers spend far too much time on their mobiles. We often read that they are less able to truly communicate with people because they are too focused on their phones. However, is it helpful to spend a week without technology? Will this really solve anything?

PARÀGRAF 2
Hi ha dues maneres d’estructurar-ho. Pots contrastar un argument a favor o en contra a cada paràgraf o donar tots els arguments a favor en un paràgraf i tots els arguments en contra en un altre paràgraf.
Et recomanem escollir la primera opció i que analitzis la idea principal a cada paràgraf.
✅EXEMPLE “a favor”
Let me start by saying that, on the one hand, it could be an interesting experiment for many young people to spend time away from their phones. Have you ever been in a situation where people around you appear to be more interested in their phones than the present company? It is also true to say that some young people suffer tremendous anxiety related to the amount and type of communication they receive via their phones. Many measure their popularity and grade their happiness according to the number of texts or likes on any one day. One strong argument for a week without a mobile phone is that people would find new ways to entertain themselves and this is always beneficial.

Proporciona els arguments en contra en aquest paràgraf i aporta exemples que pugui ajudar al lector a entendre els teus arguments.

On the other hand, will a week away from technology make any real difference? Some people may also argue that this is not a realistic experience. Life has changed and modern technology is here to stay. In addition, many young people use their phones to maintain a high level of communication. It can be argued that the way we communicate has changed over the last decade but many young people are more in touch than ever before.

Repeteix els teus arguments principals a la conclusió. Expresa la teva opinió i fes un balanç del tema.
✅EXEMPLE
To sum up, there is little doubt that a week without mobile phones give more time to discover new hobbies and socialise. On balance, however, I disagree with the statement. The smartphone is here to stay and it is improbable that this will make any real difference to anybody. I think that obliging people to spend time away from technology would be counter-productive and many people would feel unhappy and cut off from the world.
