Tant si ets del sector com si no, aprendre aquest vocabulari en anglès mèdic et serà de moltíssima utilitat. No volem ser negatius, però en ocasions ens podem posar malalts quan estem de viatge a un país estranger i tindrem que explicar al metge que ens atén què ens succeeix en anglès. Conèixer el vocabulari bàsic mèdic us ajudaran a posar-li solució, juntament amb unes frases en anglès que us hem preparat per tenir un exemple pràctic.

Vocabulari en anglès mèdic

Ache – dolor  

• Explain to the doctor exactly where it aches and for how long it has been aching.
• Explica al doctor exactament on et fa mal i des de quan està fent mal.

Allergy – al·lergia  

• Tell the doctor if you have an allergy to penicillin.
• Diga-li al metge si tens al·lèrgia a la penicil·lina.

Ambulance – ambulància  

• In the UK, you should call 999 if you need an ambulance.
• Al Regne Unit has de trucar al 999 si necessites una ambulància.

Antibiotics – antibiòtics

• Doctors are reluctant to prescribe courses of antibiotics nowadays.
• Avui dia, els metges són reticents a prescriure antibiòtics.

Appointment – cita

• If your symptoms persist, make an appointment to see your doctor again.
• Si els símptomes persisteixen, demana hora de nou al teu metge.

Bruise– blau

• After a blood test, you may have a small bruised area on your skin where the needle went in.
• Després d’un anàlisi de sang, pot ser que et surti un petit blau a la zona on t’han clavat l’agulla.

Cast – guix

• Before applying a cast, your doctor will likely wait until the swelling goes dow
• Abans de ficar-te l’escaiola, el teu metge esperarà a que la inflamació baixi.

Chemist’s / Pharmacy – farmàcia

• You should take your prescription to a pharmacy.
• Has de portar la teva recepta mèdica a la farmàcia.

Dehydrated – deshidratat  

• Your doctor can often diagnose dehydration on the basis of physical signs and symptoms.
• El teu metge sovint pot diagnosticar deshidratació a partir de signes i símptomes físics.

Diagnosis – diagnòstic  

• The doctor will use your symptoms to make a diagnosis.
• El doctor es basarà en els teus símptomes per fer un diagnòstic.

Dose – dosi 

• Make sure you take the correct dose each day.
• Assegura’t de prendre la dosis correcta cada dia.

Fever – febre

• A high fever is often a symptom of a sore throat.
• Febre alta sol ser símptoma de mal de coll.

Flu – grip  

• Once a year, senior citizens and people at risk have a flu jab.
• Un cop a l’any, les persones grans i les persones en risc hauran de vacunar-se de la grip.

Fracture – fractura  

• The orthopaedist (a doctor who specializes in bone and joint disorders) treats fractures and recommends surgical interventions.
• L’ortopedista tracta les fractures i recomana intervencions quirúrgiques.

GP (General Practicioner) – metge de capçalera

• The term “doctor” refers to a General Practitioner (GP), someone who is trained in a wide range of medicine and medical procedures.
• La paraula “metge” es refereix al metge de capçalera, algú que està capacitat en una àmplia gamma de medicaments i procediments mèdics.

Illness – enfermetat

• Fever and high blood pressure are signs that someone has an illness.
• Febre i pressió arterial alta són signes d’algun tipus d’enfermetat.

Infection – infecció

• Viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites can all cause infection.
• Els virus, bacteris, fongs i paràsits poden causar infeccions.

Injury – ferida, lessió

• Choose a sports medicine doctor or specialist to help you manage pain and heal from an athletic injury. 
• Tria un metge especialitzat en medicina esportiva per a ajudar-te a controlar el dolor i a sanar una lesió esportiva.

Itchy – picor  

• If your dry, itchy skin doesn’t get better within 2 weeks, call your doctor.
• Si la teva pell seca i amb picor no millora en dues setmanes, truca a un metge.

Numb – adormit (que no sents res)

• If numbness persists or spreads to other parts of your body, consult your doctor for an evaluation.
• Si l’adormiscament persisteix o s’estén a altres parts del cos, consulta amb el teu metge perquè t’avaluï.

Pain – dolor  

• Start with your primary care doctor to get a referral to a specialist who can help with your specific pain.
• Comença amb el teu metge del CAP perquè et pugui derivar a un especialista que et pugui ajudar amb el teu dolor en concret.

Pain killer – calmant, analgèsic

• Most doctors will start off prescribing a lesser strength painkiller.
• La majoria de metges comencen receptant un analgèsic de menor intensitat.

Patient – pacient

• Good communication with a doctor results in lower distress and more benefits to the patient.
• Una bona comunicació amb el metge produeix menys angoixa i més beneficis pel pacient.

Prescription – recepta mèdica 

• The doctor willwrite out a prescription that you can get at the chemist’s. 
• El metge t’escriurà una recepta perquè la puguis entregar a la farmàcia.

Side effects – efectes secundaris  

• The cortisone treatment had some unfortunate side effects.
• El tractament amb cortisona va tenir alguns efectes secundaris desafortunats.

Sore – dolorós

• You can often be sore for weeks after a bad fall.
• Sovint pots estar adolorit unes setmanes després d’una mala caiguda.

Swelling – inflamació

• If the swelling doesn’t go down, your doctor may prescribe a different treatment.
• Si la inflamació no baixa, el teu metge et pot receptar un tractament diferent.

Surgery – Consultori mèdic

• The village has a general store and a doctor’s surgery.
• El poble té una botiga general i un consultori mèdic.

Symptoms – símptomes

• Describe your symptoms carefully and truthfully.  
• Descriu els teus símptomes minuciosament i amb sinceritat.

Temperature – febre, temperatura

• The doctor may take your temperature.
• El doctor prendrà la teva temperatura.

Visiting hours – horaris de visita  

• The surgery’s visiting hours are on the website.
• Els horaris de visita del consultori mèdic estan a la seva web.

Wheelchair – cadira de rodes

• You may need to go in a wheelchair for a while after the operation.
• És possible que necessitis una cadira de rodes durant un temps després de l’operació.

X-ray – raigs X , radiografia

• You need to have anX-ray to see if the bone is fractured or broken. 
• Hauràs de fer-te una radiografia per veure si l’os està fracturat o trencat.
