Utilitzem el passat simple en anglès per descriure accions finalitzades o situacions en el passat. Quan succeeix l’acció pot ser en un passat recent o llunyà i el temps que va durar l’acció és indiferent.

Posarem un exemple senzill de passat simple en anglès:

She wrote an email this morning.

També utilitzem el passat simple en anglès per a dir que una cosa va succeir després d’una altra, per exemple:

She fell off her horse at first but she got back on again and again.

Com es forma el passat simple en anglès?

Afirmatiu

• I walked to work yesterday.

Negatiu

• You didn’t (did not) walk yesterday.

Interrogativa

En cas de pregunta, utilitzem l’auxiliar do en forma passada:

• Did he walk yesterday?
• Didn’t he go yesterday?

Si formulem la pregunta amb who, no utilitzem did:

• Who invented the radio?
• Who wrote “Romeo and Juliet”?

Respostes

• Yes, he did.
• No, he didn’t.

Expressions de temps

Si volem afegir un adverbi de freqüència com often, sometimes o always:

• I sometimes walked to work.

Si volem mencionar un moment definit de temps utilitzant, per exemple, last week, when I was young, yesterday, six weeks ago:

• She finished work at seven o’clock.

Si volem mencionar un moment indefinit de temps utilitzant, per exemple, the other day, ages ago, a long time ago:

She went to France years ago.
