  • Inform. The review needs to tell people who is in the film or book, who it is by and where or when people can see or go there.

Where did you go? When did you go?

What did you eat/watch/drink/read/do?

  • Describe. Give the reader a sense of what the plot/dish/place/scene is in a few sentences. In a film review you should describe the story, characters and some of the action without retelling the entire story.

What happened?

What did you think about the atmosphere?

  • Analyse. A good review gives an opinion on whether the film is good or not and why. Don’t just say “great”, “boring” or “exciting”. Give examples and reasons for your opinion. Remember to state that this is a review and this is your opinion, and don’t hesitate to repeat it. “‘In my opinion” are very strong words!

What did you think about the restaurant service?

Was the film/book well-constructed?
Is the activity good value for money?

  • Recommend: Finally, the review should tell the reader whether or not to go and see the film / read the book / visit the restaurant. People reading a review want to know about your personal experience, so they can determine if they’d like to see the film or read the book as well.

Why did choose that particular place/book/film?

Would you go back again? Why/why not?
